Overview of Impact Impact on Faculty/staff Impact on Students

Student Impact

Effective March 1, 2003, Georgia Tech will move from identifying students by their Social Security numbers to using a unique identifier called the gtID# to help protect individual privacy and confidentiality. This change in business practices is the result of a new Institute policy governing the use of Social Security numbers.

Current Students

You will automatically be assigned a gtID# as part of the conversion. This means you will to need to use your new gtID# to logon to applications like OSCAR, Housing, Student Elections, and Parking. To assist with the transition to gtID#, applications will have a “look up link” so you can look up your gtID# until you have time to memorize it. (You will be able to continue logging on to OSCAR using your Social Security number until December 31, 2003.)

Incoming & Transfer Students

You will automatically be assigned a gtID# when applying for admissions at Georgia Tech. Upon acceptance for enrollment you will receive your gtID#.

Instead of using Social Security numbers you will need your gtID# when applying for services, such as:

  • Buzz Card Center – get a Buzz card and request all other services

  • Registrar’s Office – register for classes

  • Housing – apply for campus housing

  • Parking Office – apply for a parking permit

  • Health Center – receive health services

  • Office of Information Technology – email account activations

  • Library – use library resources

  • Vote during student elections

  • Setup access for most buildings on campus

  • Bursar’s Office – make tuition and fee payments
